Dental veneers

What is it?

Dental veneer, also known as laminate, is a very thin layer of dental porcelain or composite resin. It looks exactly like the surface of a tooth and fits it like a false fingernail fits over a nail. Dental veneers are used to improve the appearance of teeth when they are spaced, misshapen or discoloured.

Who is a candidate for the veneer placement?

Dental veneers are used for cosmetic purposes when there is a need to restore or improve the appearance of one‘s smile. This procedure is very beneficial in cases of chipped, broken or worn down teeth. Also, it helps to close gaps between teeth or fix irregularly shaped teeth. Furthermore, dental veneers could be a great alternative to teeth whitening.

Before the veneer placement

There are some steps you should take before the veneer placement. First of all, you should clearly explain to your dentist the result you wish to achieve. Also, you should tell your doctor if there are any signs of active periodontal disease, including bleeding gums, swollen or tender gums and persistent bad breath. Any oral diseases, including gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and decay, have to be fixed before the veneer replacement.

How is dental veneers placement performed?

There are two main types of the veneer replacement depending on the material that is used. In a direct placement a composite veneer is affixed directly on a surface of the tooth. This type of the procedure does not involve a laboratory fabrication and is usually completed in a single dental visit.

Dental veneersThe other method is called indirect because it requires additional steps before placing the veneer on the tooth. This method is used for porcelain veneers and requires two or three dental visits. In case of the indirect veneer placement a doctor will first remove some outer shiny enamel surface (about ½ millimetre). This is necessary for a veneer to fit properly and to ensure that you will not feel it. The doctor will then choose a shade of the veneer that best suits the colour of the remaining teeth. This is done with the help of a special shade chart. The next step is taking an impression of the tooth in order to create a dental mould. The doctor will send the mould to the laboratory where dental technicians will construct the veneer that perfectly fits the form of your tooth. On the next visit, the doctor will apply a special chemical on a surface of the tooth in order to make it rough. Then he or she will put the veneer into the right place and affix it with composite resin cement. Finally, a special curing light is used to harden the resin.

What about the results?

A lifespan of dental veneers depends on many factors (including quality of porcelain and bonding agent, oral hygiene and the skill of laboratory technicians) and may range from 5 to 20 years or even longer. Brushing and flossing your teeth routinely as well as rinsing them with water after drinking coloured beverages will help to maintain the satisfying result of dental veneers.
